Cutting the Cable Cord

You want to know what the final straw was with our cable company? It wasn’t bad service. It wasn’t that our bill had increased by 100% since we first subscribed. Nope. Something much more simple. It was the first weekend of football season, and Nathan found out that weekend that we no longer had NFL Red Zone because our cable provider was in negotiations with….whoever produces NFL Red Zone. Yup. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

In about a week, we had swapped the cable cord for an Apple TV, and a different internet provider. And I don’t think I’ve ever been happier by our non-cable, cable. Here’s the path that we went down…

We use FUBO TV for our normal “cable” access. It can work like a normal TV and DVR, inclusive of live sports. But even better, you can watch pretty much any TV show on demand. Amazing!!!

We also already have Amazon Prime, and we can access Showtime through that.

We added HBO Now – which is also super cool. It has every episode of every HBO show that ever aired. Nathan just finished re-watching Entourage. And there are more episodes than Harrison could ever watch of Sesame Street (aka Elmo.)

And, of course, we have Netflix as well. Because…well, I’m just not sure how we ever survived without Netflix.

I was soooo skeptical. But I’m absolutely in love with not having cable! It works just like our old set-up, except so much better. And extra bonus, it’s costing us less than our cable bill.

So, I’m curious. Are we literally the last people to cut the cable cord? I feel like the people I work with that are younger than me, are like – yeah, we haven’t had cable for….years. But what about everybody else?

  1. We haven’t had cable since 2017. We use YouTube TV for our Network shows and sports. Because we have AT&T as our phone company, they include HBO for us. We have Amazon Prime and we just cut Netflix to add Disney+. It’s way cheaper than cable would be. & We haven’t missed cable because we still get local news and sports.
