Ski Trip Planning: Buy or Rent?

Nathan started taking Harrison on an annual ski trip when he was three. Nathan plans the trip, books everything, and handles the daily activities, grocery runs, etc. involved in the trip. This upcoming year, Jonathan will get to join in on the annual ski trip now that he’s three, and we are busy making sure we have all of the gear that we need for them in Colorado.

I didn’t grow up skiing, and have absolutely no desire to learn at this point in my life. My dream is to be able to have three little boys that love to ski with their dad, and a little alone time for mom to get a massage or drink hot chocolate and read by the fire while the boys take on the mountain. Needless to say, I had a lot to learn to prep Harrison for his first ski trip, and we’ve found what works for us so far.

I’m sharing today what we’ve preferred to buy and pack versus what we rent for the very short trip.

But first…here’s a little look at my boys on their ski trip last year…

Things We Buy:

Snowbibs: We buy good quality snowbibs for the boys. As much as possible, I buy them secondhand from a site like Poshmark. Good quality snowbibs are expensive, and kids grow…a lot. So truly, I buy Harrison snowbibs, and then they get passed down from one boy to the next. Obermeyer snowbibs have been great for us so far, and withstand our roughest child on clothes, Harrison.

Long underwear: For a three day ski trip, I send three sets of long underwear for each boy. Most of the time, they can get by with just one set a day, and ideally don’t have to do any laundry. And at the worst case, if one set gets wet, they can let it dry and re-use if necessary later in the trip.

Wool socks: My favorite are SmartWool for the boys. Tall wool socks are important so that it covers most of their calf up to their knee. I assume one pair per day plus an additional two sets for each kid.

Ski goggles: We buy ski goggles for each boy. We have Oakley, Giro, and Smith. All of these brands have worked well and are good quality.

Ski coat: Similar to snowbibs, I buy a winter snow coat for each boy and then it gets passed down. I try to buy secondhand through a site like Poshmark, and buy a good quality one that will last us a loooong time given that I’m hoping they will last through three boys. Most importantly, I buy a bright color coat. More than anything else, this has been the most helpful for Nathan to make sure he can easily spot the boys on the mountain and at ski school. Red, bright blue, neon – it all works. Just not black or navy for us.

Snow basics: Hat, mittens (at least two sets!), snowboots, and scarf. The only thing special about these items, is that the mittens have a velcro strap to keep them tight around their wrist like these. I bought Harrison both a scarf ring and a baclava, and Harrison only ended up ever wearing the scarf.

Things We Rent:

Skis: The boys only go skiing once a year, so it doesn’t make sense for us to buy skis for them to only be used once a year. Nathan has been contemplating buying his own skis, especially if we continue to go on this annual trip, it probably makes sense for him to just own skis.

Helmet: We’ve contemplating buying boys helmets, but have decided that similar to the skis, it just doesn’t make sense for us with how little we go skiing and how fast their heads grow. Nathan did buy a helmet for himself, though, last year. He ended up picking out a Smith helmet, and he was happy with it!

Ski Boots: If I think their heads grow fast, their feet grow even faster. We will probably never buy the boys ski boots until their feet stop growing. Nathan did buy a pair for himself to have, though!

I’m working on convincing Nathan to help me write a post on planning a ski trip for little kids because that’s been by far the thing that we get the absolute most questions about every time they come back!

The Black Hills 2023: Part II

We go to the Black Hills to my parents’ cabin nearly every year. I blogged Part I of our trip HERE. And I’m continuing our trip today!

After naps on the Fourth of July, we headed over to my parents’ cabin for dinner and kid-friendly fireworks. Like sparklers and poppers. 🙂

Just two dads who were influenced by an Instagram ad to grab these cute Bluey Fourth of July shirts and surprise ALL of us with them. So cute!

Fourth of July as a parent of small children summed up in a picture.

My sister and me. What do you think – do we look alike? Or not at all? Our mom swears we look nothing alike. And generally speaking, the rest of the world thinks we look exactly like but with different hair color and eye color.

Our kids did fairy hunts every night at the cabin, and at the end of each fairy hunt was a prize left by the fairies. This night…it was special suckers.

The next day, we rented e-bikes with the kids and went on a bike ride. And my bike ride didn’t last very long until…

I lost control of my bike, and because it was so heavy (I should have never been riding a bike as heavy as the one I was), I flew over the handlebars and onto the gravel. I’m still nursing the bruises, scrapes, and bruised ribs….but there will be a time to get back on the bike again.

After a nap with baby Aidan to recover….

It was time to rally for parents’ night out!

We had a great time first in downtown Deadwood and then heading to Spearfish for dinner and drinks.

Our last day at the cabin was low key. The kids played at Mimi and Papa’s, while I worked on packing us up for the trip back home.

Jonathan got in several more tractor rides before we left…

These two 😍

Our ride home was mostly uneventful….and so very long. But we had a wonderful time at the cabin this year!

A sneak peak of our family pics from our time up there!

Thanks for being here in this space with me!

The Black Hills 2023: Part I

Coming back from vacation feels like being stuck in a tornado trying to catch up. It’s amazing how you can feel so caught up and like everything is in a good place before you leave, and then return and feel like there are nowhere near enough hours in the day to catch up on all the things that need to be done around the house and for the family.

But, we are back. And I’m slowly catching back up. We had an AMAZING trip to visit my parents in the Black Hills, and thankfully, all kids were healthy for the trip!

We drove up and back in one day. It took us a record (on the long end) 13 hours each way. We kept telling ourselves with that with the boys’ ages this year, this should theoretically be the most difficult year.

I’m going to pepper you with all sorts of pictures of family and the cousins. We had the best time hanging with my sister’s family and Mimi + Papa!

We’re ready for the big trip!

We have very little space in my car with all three rows up for car seats. We bought a rooftop carrier, and I honestly felt like we could fit more in the rooftop carrier than we could when we had the entire back of the car with the third row down. It was definitely the way to go! And I was so thankful that I didn’t come away feeling like we needed a bigger car.

We always stop halfway through the drive and pack a picnic lunch. We eat it at a park and let the boys run around the playground to blow off some energy. Aidan seemed content to be out of the car. 🙂

The other plus about the rooftop carrier was there was an empty seat next to Harrison I could sit in if I needed to help the kids or play with them during the drive. Harrison is a roadtrip warrior.

And we made it!

Our first night in South Dakota was a fast dinner of pizza at our rental cabin and then straight to bed. Slumberpod helping me out with Aidan this trip.

The next morning we ate breakfast, then spent the day recovering for the adults and playing at Mimi + Papa’s for the kids.

This boy was IN LOVE with Papa’s tractor. He’d sneak into the garage to look at it. He’d climb on it if it was out in the driveway. Every morning he woke up, he asked me if he could go ride it.

The happiest little guy to be back at the cabin!

I spent a lot of time feeding this one…

And the big kids enjoyed s’mores by the fire pit!

The next day, we had family pictures suuuuper early. Then took the kids to the rec center for some swimming!

The big kids got to go hunt turkey feathers at Mimi’s…

And played cards during quiet time.

Aidan still enjoying his Mimi’s snuggles…

The next day was the Fourth of July. I stayed back at the cabin with Aidan while the kids and the rest of the adults headed into town for a Fourth of July parade…which there are no pictures of because apparently it poured rain the whole time and all adults and most children were miserable and left early. HA!

After all of the fun that was had those previous two days, it was naps all around for us…

Including our big kid! This is a rarity these days and usually only happens when forced 🙂

The rest of the trip at…some point soon. :). The baby is up and crying – so I’m off to be Mom!

30A Beach Vacation 2022: Part 2

This is the second part of our one week beach vacation this year to 30a in Florida. We had such a wonderful trip, and the boys really enjoy the water and sand as much as we do! The first half of our trip post is HERE!

Here’s a look at our itinerary the second half of the trip:

  • Tuesday: Still beachin’. Dinner reservations at The Bay in the evening
  • Wednesday: Another beach day! Pack sandwiches for lunch, nap under umbrellas. Make spaghetti at home for dinner.
  • Thursday: Boys finally needed a beach break. Head into Destin for running around a playground and outlet mall shopping. Hit up Shunk Gulley for lunch on the way home. Sunset pictures on the beach and more crab hunting after dark
  • Friday: Back to the beach! Sandwiches packed. Head into Seaside for the evening for shopping at Duckies toystore, Sundog books, and dinner from Wild Bill’s Beach Dogs. Enjoy the movie in the Seaside ampitheater showing that night: The Incredibles.
  • Saturday: Pack up the house and head home!

One of my favorite things about this trip was how excited Jonathan was about swimming. He’s constantly yell at us, “I GO SWIM!” And then would proceed to leisurely float on his back for forever in the ocean. It was ADORABLE. Such a happy little guy.

30A Beach Vacation 2022: Part 1

That title is a mouthful. 30A is an area between Destin and Panama City in Florida that Nathan’s family has visited for years. And I eagerly adopted as a favorite vacation spot after joining their family. 🙂 This is my third trip to 30A. We always have so much fun! But we definitely missed having friends and family there with us this year.

We stayed in the same beach house rental that we did last year. In 2021, we went to the beach with my sister and her family, and absolutely loved the proximity to the beach and Seaside, one of our favorite beach towns, so we opted for the same house again!

Our Itinerary for the first part of the trip was:

  • Saturday: Arrive in Panama City. Lauren grocery shop while the boys nap. 5:45 reservation at Great Southern in Seaside
  • Sunday: Beach day! Pack sandwiches and spend the day at the beach, and the pool in the afternoon. Tacos and Mexican Rice for dinner at home!
  • Monday: Beach day again! Same plan as previous day. Order pizza to the house for dinner, and crab hunting after dark!

I’m going to share a whole bunch of pictures!

I think we’ve perfected getting all of our stuff to the airport and parking the car….

Ready to get on the airplane!

Our Beach Packing List

We’re going back to one of our favorite places, the BEACH, so soon! And to prepare for that, I’m sharing our beach packing list! It’s also my way of forcing myself to make our packing list, so I feel a lot less stressed. I’m also sharing our list as a PDF printable as well at the end!

Nathan made an impulse purchase years ago for this bluetooth speaker, and it’s held up so well for years. The sound is amazing, holds a charge for a really long time. It just works really, really well!

We throw this beach blanket that folds up into a tiny pouch in our suitcase each trip. It’s a good place for the kids to be able to sit and have lunch at the beach, and then just shake off the sand at the end of the day to go home.

This beauty has been our travel stroller since Harrison was a baby. It maneuvers easily, it’s lightweight, and I don’t care at all if it gets beat up by airline baggage claim.

Ok – if you need a jump start on your own beach packing list, you can download my list here!

The Black Hills 2022: Part 2

Over the week of the Fourth of July, my family and I packed up the car and headed to South Dakota to spend a week in the Black Hills visiting my parents. They have a cabin just outside of Deadwood. I look forward to going up there for a week every year. It’s cool, crisp, and the mountain air is perfection.

If you missed Part 1 of our trip, I blogged about it yesterday HERE!

Part 2 starts with a hike on the Mickelson Trail. Baby J absolutely LOVED this hike. In fact, even though we took the stroller, Harrison rode in the stroller most of the time and Jonathan walked!

The Black Hills 2022: Part 1

We got back last week from a trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota to visit my parents. For those that are new here, a bit of history on the Black Hills for my family, because this isn’t going to be a typical travel post about what we did and where we ate!

My parents grew up at the foot of the Black Hills in Rapid City, SD. My maternal grandparents bought some land in the Black Hills before my living memory, and lived in the Hills pretty my entire childhood. As kids, we’d always spend a week in the Hills visiting my grandparents. My sister and I have wonderful memories in the Hills growing up. We’d catch and release chipmunks, go camping, feed the deer, hike (I hated hiking growing up, though), and just generally lived outside in nature for a week.

Years ago, my parents bought land in the Hills as well, and in 2014 built a cabin on that land. They spend their summers living at the cabin, and the rest of the year they live in Kansas City. Thus began our own family annual pilgrimage to the Hills once a year.

Omaha!

A few weeks ago, we packed up the kids and took off for a quick roadtrip up the highway from Kansas City to Omaha for the weekend. It’s an easy drive for us, so the perfect change of scenery for a weekend away with the boys. We were only there for two nights, but we had so much fun getting to just focus on our family and the boys. As is so often at home, there are competing priorities and things that need to be done. It was so nice to put that to the side for a few days and focus on my favorite things in life: my boys.

Checking in to our rooms! This was Baby J’s first time in a hotel room, and there was lots to explore!

Let’s Look At…My Hometown

Harrison’s favorite song for the past year has been “More Than My Hometown” by Morgan Wallen, and whenever I look at this prompt, I think of that. It makes me smile.

I love this link up. A fun little prompt sharing a little part of our lives. As usual, the link-up is hosted by two of my favorite blogs (Shay @ Mix and Match Mama and Erika @ A Little Bit of Everything). Before we get to this month’s prompt…a look back at what we’ve looked at this year:

Today, I’m sharing a bit about my hometown. My hometown is just a few miles farther south than where we currently live. I grew up in a Kansas City suburb called Overland Park. That would be the very technical answer for my hometown, but quite frankly, there isn’t much difference between my hometown and the city where we currently live and are raising our kids, Prairie Village. And they are all just suburbs in the same general area of Kansas City.

Kansas City, while the city proper that most people associate with KC, is in Missouri, the Kansas City metropolitan area actually straddles the state line between Missouri and Kansas.

I loved having grown up in Kansas City, and now raising my own kids in KC. Having lived now in several other cities, I’ve realized that I’m truly a midwestern girl at heart. The people are kind and helpful, for a mid-size city there’s a lot of fun things to do, and it continues to grow, and it’s hard to picture ever loving another place to live more than this one!

SPORTS: Kansas City is home to many professional sports teams. Most popular are the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. I have many fond memories growing up and over the years going to many games.
