June Book Review

I’ve read book review posts from so many of you all for YEARS. Enjoyed them, referenced them when I needed a new book to take to the beach, but if you’ve been here any amount of time, you know I’m the SLOWEST READER ALIVE. I read a book for sometimes up to a year. It is a slow painstaking read.

But then, Nathan mentioned that he had started listening to Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey and it was really good, and I should use our shared Prime account to listen to it. I had Greenlights on my “want to read” list for awhile, so I thought I’d finally give Audible a shot. And so began the transformation. Before I knew it, I’d “read” six books in a month. WHAT?! Life changing.

So here’s my very first ever book review. I never thought I’d see the day.

The first book I read this month was Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey. Ohhh guys. It was good. The Audio version is read by Matthew McConaughey, too, and it made it even better to listen to these life stories in his voice. He’s an incredible storyteller. Some of his stories are truly unbelievable, and I really loved it. Highly recommend!

Up next, I read The Road Back to You.

I’ve been wanting to dig into the Enneagram for a loooong time. Personality types fascinate me. Particularly in understanding myself and my partner. I really liked this one. I found myself trying to type other family members and friends, too, listening to it. This is one that I wish I would have had in hard copy, because I wanted to go back and dig into the analysis of each type. 😂. I liked this one so much, and I think there was so much more I could take from it, that I’ll likely listen to it again at some point.

After flying through those two, I saw that Busy Toddler’s Guide to Actual Parenting was free in my Prime library, so I decided to give it a listen!

I started following Susie on Instagram over a year ago when the pandemic hit because I needed all of the help with ideas of what to do with my VERY BUSY TODDLER who was home all day every day because of COVID.

I’m one of those people that likes parenting books. They give me ideas and help shift my perspective on things. I easily take the ideas that work for me, and the things that don’t resonate with me or our family, I leave. I thought it was a cute read – very easy and quick. Her idea of how to shift your mindset and embrace the 2’s, and how to deal with sibling disagreements I thought were both very helpful. So much of the book I agreed with, but didn’t feel like it added any new ideas/thoughts for me.

After my parenting book, I moved to Where the Crawdads Sing.

So many of you read this and loved this when it came out. It took me a LONG time to get into it. In fact, I nearly gave up on it after getting about a third of the way through, but you all told me I needed to keep going, and I’m so glad you did. The second half of the book was unexpected and quick. Really well done. As long as your stick with it. And I hear there’s a movie version being made, so now I can see the movie without feeling guilty for having not read the book!

Up next, I read To Hell with the Hustle.

While I agreed with the sentiment, this book fell flat for me. I don’t struggle with saying ‘no,’ so I didn’t really feel like this spoke to me or gave me new things to consider.

The very last book I finally finished (because I’ve been reading it on my Kindle for what seems like a year) was Lauren Akin’s book Live in Love.

It’s a biographical book, so walks through her life and upbringing, and her life with Thomas Rhett. I was entertained by it, mostly because I’m a Thomas Rhett fan, and it was fun to hear the stories behind some of things he writes about in his songs. It was an easy read, despite the fact that it took me FOREVER, but I wouldn’t call it earth-shattering or a must read.

Suggestions on what I should ‘read’ next???
