I’m currently sitting on my couch, holding a baby, and trying to type at the same time. If that isn’t a picture of life lately, I don’t know what is. If your’e new here, once a month, I link up with two of my favorite blogs (Shay @ Mix and Match Mama and Erika @ A Little Bit of Everything), to share a “look” into some little aspect of our life. Here’s a peak back at what we’ve “looked” at so far this year:
- In January, we looked at our bedside table
- In February, we looked at our winter wardrobe
- In March, we looked at what’s inside our purse
- In April, we looked at Easter at our house
- In May, we looked at our weekends
- In June, I shared where I was dreaming about vacationing
- In July, I shared my very pregnant summer wardrobe
And I missed August and September adjusting to life with two kiddos.
Today we’re sharing how we pumpkin. So many directions I could take this, but I thought I’d share my outside decor for fall! Plus it gives me good motivation to get in gear to get all of my pumpkins out.
Fall always seems like the shortest season. And because Christmas seems to last only a hot minute, I find myself pulling down fall decorations the second that Thanksgiving is behind us. (Anybody else?)
You all know I love decorating outside. My flower gardens this spring/summer were my most favorite yet. I shared several tours of our gardens over the summer on my Instagram – both as IGTV’s and saved several as a highlight on my page. (See “Gardens” highlight.)
Most of my flowers still look so good going into fall that it seems like a shame to take apart and throw away perfectly good flowers. So this year, I only took out the flowers that had really started to lose their luster, and instead tried fall decorating around my summer color pallet – which was full of pinks and purples. It’s not as heavy in the reds and oranges as other years, but I’m kind of loving it.
This is on our backyard patio. Through spring a summer I have at least eleven pots of plants on our patio, and this fall, I cut it back to only three. Two saved from summer plants, and one completely re-vamped with new plants for the fall.
Here’s a look at what this set of pots looked like this summer…
I really tried to utilize the same color scheme as the lantana, though, for our fall plants, while picking things that do better in the cooler weather. (The lantana is that far left pot in the summer picture.) Thus, the pink mum and orange pansies in my fall container. The grass in the large pot I’m just slightly obsessed with. I’ve been eyeing that grass all season thinking it would be perfect as a “spiller” in a fall planter, after seeing another friend use it in a fall pot a whole YEAR ago. (I sometimes get things stuck in my head for SO LONG before I actually make them a reality.)
The gold marigold is a transplant from my marigolds in front of my house. I just transplanted it into this pot (and another one in the pot below!). My large pot really complements all of the colors of the lantana – pink, orange, yellow. I love getting to look at this set out my kitchen window.
And here’s a look at our front planter done up for fall!
And here’s a look at what it looked like this summer…
I kept the purple sweet potato vine, and replaced everything else. My mom was taking apart some of her pots, and gave me the purple fountain grass. I love love love purple fountain grass in a pot, particularly a fall pot. The seed pods look extra fall-ish. Then I popped in a gorgeous orange-y red cone flower. This is a perennial, and I may try to keep it alive in the garage this winter and plant it in the landscape in the spring. But I just loved the color and the way it looked, that I’ve mentally accepted it as an annual in case it doesn’t make it. The gold marigold is again borrowed (ahem – transplanted) from my patch of them in front of our house. And the little mums will bloom a beautiful golden yellow as well when they get ready to burst.
I’m going to share a tour inside my house of our fall decor next week!
Yep, the day after Thanksgiving we take down all the fall stuff and Christmas happens in that short 8 hour span. It’s madness to do it all in one day but I too think that month seems so short and I like to get the most out of it.
Yes! We’re the same way!
