We recently finished up our backyard shed project. Over a year ago, we had a downpour of rain for several days straight. The back corner of our yard, which is a low lying spot in the yard, flooded. It looked like a small lake around our shed.

The shed hadn’t been in great shape for awhile. The foundation under the floor needed to be replaced, and the flooding of the backyard kind of sealed the deal.

This type of rain happens maybe once a year. But this was the first year it really looked flooded and not just very soppy due to some landscaping that had been done at a neighbor’s house and caused the water to pool in this one area.

Nathan started ripping down the old shed once the water receded. And then we lived with our shed items in our screened in porch for…a year. Because that’s how we like to do projects around here. It takes us forever to pull the trigger on getting around to solving the problem.

Then we get a bid or two to do the work, and we’re shocked by the cost. Always. Following the bids, Nathan decides he’s going to do some part of the project himself.

And in our case, that was building the new foundation of the shed and filling in the back landscaping with rocks to mitigate the issue with flooding and being a low-lying area.

The boys loved this part. Harrison in particular is a huge help. He wants to be just like Dad.

And Jonathan loved the big equipment.

I mean, how could you blame him?! We were the hit of the neighborhood this particular weekend. All of the kids came over to watch!

And after the foundation was built out, it looked like this…

I used cardboard as a weed barrier under the landscaped areas. Cardboard will dissolve over the next year, so that it can be directly planted into, while smothering and killing the weeds underneath. On top of the cardboard, we added an inch of compost and three inches of mulch.

We chose to build a custom shed through Tuff Shed, and we painted the exterior ourselves.

We are so happy with how it turned out. We’ve had zero issues with the back corner and water now. Yay!

We considered this our mini test color for our exterior house painting that will need to happen in the near future. 🙂

And I’m very happy to have all of the shed items out of our screened in porch.

What to ask for if you want this same shed:

8′ x 12′ Premier Tall Ranch. We upgraded the doors to a double door, and added flood vents on the bottom. We added a pegboard to the back wall for organization and shelving to one side.
