Our Nighttime Routine

I’m so routine based. I love routine. I find it so comforting. How type A does that make me?!?! Yes, I can laugh at my delight in routines. But I was particularly excited to learn that children also like routine. It helps when they know what’s coming next, and that it happens in the same way every time. So I thought it might be fun to share some of our routines here. First, I thought I’d share our nighttime routine!

Nighttime routine always starts with the kids’ bath…

This is Nathan’s part of the evening. He’s in charge of bathing the boys, greasing them up with lotion, and getting them in their jammies. I’ve had a lot of friends ask me if we really bathe the boys every night.

And the answer is, “Yes!”

Dear Jonathan (v. X)

Another month gone by of your first year. Ten months with sweet baby J. I love your clapping and toothy grin. I love when your little body snuggles against mine in the morning, knowing that I am a safe place for you. I love the adoration and laughs you and your big brother have for each other. Your curiosity about the dog’s water bowl, closing doors by yourself, and what my drink tastes like that day.

I love you, sweet boy. I wish for you all the happiness in the world. I wish I could memorize every last bit of this baby year, but it is almost gone already. Two more months until we celebrate a whole year with you.

Love you always,

Mommy

Dear Jonathan (v. IX)

Happy nine months, little guy! This past month you spent two weeks at home with daddy and me after a covid scare in your class, you finally mastered getting water out of your sippy, and you are so proud of yourself, and you’re army crawling and exploring all the things. Especially Sawyer’s food and water dishes. 😬

Every night, I put you to bed, and you fall asleep in my arms. I rock you and just stare at you, hoping to hold on to the way your face looks so peaceful. The weight of your body at nine months. The little curl tuft of hair on top of your head.

You are so loved. I hope you never doubt it. Not even for a second. I let minutes tick by hoping that each minute bores into you a deep sense that you will always be safe and loved in your mama’s arms.

I love you sweet boy,

Mommy

Friday Favorites {04.23.21}

Happy Friday, friends! I am two weeks post second vaccination this week, which has me so very thankful! And ready to do all the things. Is it strange, though, I still feel super cautious about doing some of the things we used to do regularly before this pandemic? I can’t wait to go out to a restaurant with Nathan, but a little part of me is still saying, “Yeah, but is that smart? Are you sure you want to do that?” Amazing how we can re-train our brain. May be time to start re-training it to be more normal. 😊.

I’ve got a whole lot of family favorites this week. Enjoy and happy weekend!

I know Easter was forever ago, but I haven’t had an opportunity to share any pictures yet from our Easter celebrations. We got the chance to see my family for Easter this year, and I had so much fun watching Harrison and cousin Evie Easter egg hunt at my parents!

What’s Up Wednesday {03.31.21}

After a full week last week of pretty much constant rain, it gave way to a beautiful weekend. Nathan went golfing for the first time in over a year, we played outside for hours on end, and even got to spend some time with my sister and the cousins.

Today, I’m linking up with Shay and Sheaffer to share with you what’s going on in our life!

1: WHAT WE’RE EATING THIS WEEK:

  • Saturday: Cheesy Pasta Florentine
  • Sunday: Burgers & Hot dogs
  • Monday & Tuesday: Leftovers
  • Wednesday: Shrimp Fried Rice

Dear Jonathan (v. VIII)

My goodness. Happy eight month birthday, little one. Your little light brightens up the whole room. Your patient demeanor and the way you sit back and take in the world makes me wonder what you think of all these crazy people around you.

You’ve made me a better mama, learning a new little personality. Admiring your thoughtful and easy-going personality. You have me so eager to see what games you will like to play, what will interest you about your world. You’ve made my heart grow even more than I could have imagined it would grow. So very blessed to be entrusted to raise you, little boy.

I wish I could just hold on to your sweet little baby-ness for forever. It just moves way too fast.

Love,

Mommy

Lanes Lately // March 2021

I said on Friday that I’d ghosted this little corner of the internet lately. That means that there hasn’t been many life updates, so it seemed right to do a little Lanes Lately to catch you all up on the daily happenings around here…

MAKING: The grill is out, people! And burgers and hot dogs are being grilled! Grilling and smoking season is my faaaaav. I love heartiness of winter food, but food from the grill or smoker just tastes better in my opinion.

I’ve also got chorizo chili planned for later this week when the weather turns dreary and rainy. Our favorite for dreary, cold days!

Dear Jonathan (v. VII)

Happy monthly birthday. Whenever that is in a month that doesn’t contain a 30th day. You have awakened this past month. Discovering your ability to move and explore, you’re delighting us each and everyday as we watch you.

In particular this month, your adoration of your big brother has really been on display. He makes you laugh harder than anyone else. Your eyes sparkle and light up when he talks to you. It’s magical.

I sit here rocking you to sleep for your morning nap. I’m amazed that seven months have already clipped by, and I want to imprint your babyhood on my heart. The way you feel in my arms, the soft snores as you peacefully snooze. You are such a joy, Jonathan Brooks. Love you. So big.

Love,

Mommy

Dear Jonathan (v. VI)

The time between five and six months sped up infinitely. We lived a whirlwind of doctors appointments, going to ‘school’ for the first time, and long cuddles of exhaustion in the evening for both of us.

Each night, though, finally, exhaling from the day and rocking you while you sleep, I remember how lucky I am. Lucky to be a mom. To be YOUR mom. To me, little boy, you are perfect. A blessing to be your calm and safe place at the end of every day. So very blessed.

Happy six months, my little love.

Love,

Mommy

**Hey friends, I’ve been wrapped up with work lately, and didn’t get a chance to write much over the past weekend. So, instead of throwing together a bunch of posts that I don’t love, I’m going to take the rest of the week off. I’ll see you back here on Tuesday! And Go Chiefs!**

What’s Up Wednesday {01.27.21}

Before I get into What’s Up Wednesday, I just wanted to thank you all for the support and love for me and little baby J yesterday, when I blogged about his plagiocephaly and baby helmet. Both here and on Instagram, there were just so many kind words. I’m so very thankful. It took me some time to process everything that was happening with Jonathan for myself, and then be ready to talk openly about it. I know, though, how much I appreciate others vulnerability in the less than perfect moments of life because of how much I learn from them. So, anyways, I just wanted to say, “Thanks!”

Ok – I love going back and reading these posts. A little window into what’s happening in our life at the Lanes lately. But somehow, my last What’s Up Wednesday was in October. I don’t know how, or what happened in life…but it’s high time to share a little Lane life.

I’m linking up with Shay and Sheaffer to share with you what’s going on in our life!

1: WHAT WE’RE EATING THIS WEEK:

I don’t know how it happened, but I’ve got so many good leftovers in our fridge that we’re going to be eating leftovers pretty much all week. And a good thing too because this week is super busy for me at work.

  • Sunday: Leftovers
  • Monday: Leftovers
  • Tuesday: Leftovers…or maybe Beef with Broccoli
  • Wednesday: Leftovers
  • Thursday: Pulled pork tacos from my parents!
  • Friday: Carry out dinner

2: WHAT I’M REMINISCING ABOUT:

A lot lately, I’ve curled up in Harrison’s bed putting him down for the night and told him stories about things he used to do when he was little.

Like how he would come into our bed Saturday morning, and jump right into the middle. He’d get himself all comfy cozy under the covers, and we’d watch Sesame Street. Lately, Harrison has loved hearing stories about things he did when he was younger.

Also, TODAY is our niece, Everly’s, fourth birthday! Happy birthday, cousin Evie! This was just last year…

And now she’s got her own sense of style. Have to say her style at four is more impressive than mine at 36.

I wish we could be eating sprinkle cake, running around your basement, and opening presents with you today!
