Valentine’s Day Get to Know Lauren + Nathan!

Happy belated Valentine’s Day! I thought it would be fun to do an old-school questionnaire style post all about Nathan and me to celebrate Valentine’s Day!

  • How’d you meet: We met at a work happy hour. Nathan had just joined the company after graduating from K-State, and I had been working at the company for close to a year after moving back to Kansas City. He says he tried to strike up a conversation, and all of my responses were short and uninterested. He’s probably right the way he remembers this. 😊 Good thing he kept trying!

  • First Date: Late September 2012. The morning after a concert we had gone to together with a big group of work friends, he called and asked me to meet him for lunch. I ordered the kale salad. And the only thing I remember him talking about was telling me that his mom was really into natural health. (I took this to mean that she must be anti-medicine…which, is hilarious looking back at it, because this is not how I’d describe her at all. First because (1) it’s not true, and (2) I wouldn’t say that her interest in natural wellness is a dominant trait that I’d feel the need to mention to someone who has never met her to describe her.)
  • How long have you been together: Nathan officially asked me to be his girlfriend in November of 2012. That makes it 9 and a half years together!
  • Married or not: Married October 18, 2014
  • Age difference: I’m three years older than Nathan. It’s one of the reasons I brushed off his initial attempts at flirting with me because I was hyper aware and sensitive to our age gap and position difference at work. We never worked together (i.e. I never supervised Nathan’s work or worked on the same project team) at the Company we both worked for and met at – thankfully! Now the age difference rarely comes up, and I don’t think about it much at all except on my birthday.
  • Who was interested first: Nathan. To me, he might as well have had DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT BECAUSE HE’S YOUNGER THAN YOU tattooed on his forehead.
  • Taller? Nathan. Claims he’s 6’, but I’m pretty sure it’s 5’11”.
  • Who said I love you first: He did. At the beginning of our relationship, he was always the braver one. I was way too afraid of getting hurt, and thereby looking like we had failed.
  • Most impatient: I’ve got that one covered. Nathan often says these types of questions could say, ”who has patience?” And the answer would still be the same. He does.
  • Most sensitive: Me. If I get into a bad head space, I can spiral easily into assuming that everything is an attack on me.
  • Loudest: Nathan. Get him around his fraternity brothers, and you’re going to need to leave the room if you want to have a conversation without yelling.
  • Most stubborn: Nathan would say me. I would say him. We’re both incredibly headstrong, but in arguments he holds onto the proverbial torch the longest. Who is more stubborn about getting their way in everyday life? Me. Without a doubt. I like things to be put back a certain way. I like what I like.
  • Falls asleep first: Usually me, but that’s only because I go to sleep first. If we go to sleep at the same time, Nathan falls asleep and then heavy breathes until I lose my mind with jealousy that he’s sleeping so well. Like any sane minded wife.
  • Cooks better: Nathan when he spends the time to do it. I cook way more – so he’d probably say I’m the better cook.
  • Better morning person: Hello, my name is Lauren, and I thrive in the morning after a good night of sleep.
  • Better driver: Him.
  • Most Competitive: Him, although I’m not far behind.
  • Funniest: I wouldn’t characterize either of our personalities as funny.
  • Where do you eat out most as a couple? We get take-out the most from BRGR (a local burger place in KC), Chick-fil-a, and Chipotle. #kids
  • Who is more social? Nathan. I could live with no one for months on end and be perfectly happy.
  • Who is the neat freak? Me.
  • Where was your first kiss? At that concert before our first date.
  • How long did it take to get serious? a couple of months before we became exclusive
  • Who’s indecisive? Neither of us. We’re both very decisive. It doesn’t mean one of us doesn’t take FORVER to make a decision. But there is no waffling after a decision is made.
  • Who spends more? I spend way more because I purchase all of our family goods: groceries, Target runs, kids clothes, pretty much every Amazon box that shows up has my name on it.
  • Who is the first one to admit when they’re wrong? Me.
  • Has more tattoos? No tattoos for either of us
  • Who sings better? Me. Hi – I’m a former theater kid. I grew up doing voice lessons, dance lessons, and lots of time on stage!
  • Who hogs the remote? I’m in charge of the remote. I’m by far the superior spouse with fast forwarding on our Apple TV.
  • Did you go to the same high school? No. However, we know some mutual people from high school because we did grow up in the same city.
  • Where is the furthest you two have traveled together? Spain! See picture below of the younger, unencumbered by children yet Nathan in Spain. 🙂
  • Who drives when you’re going somewhere together? Usually Nathan.

Tell me, were you a sucker for a good email survey questionnaire like this back in the day of email forwards??

  1. I love these types of post! It’s always so fun. My husband and I are only 3 months apart and he loves to point out that I’m older from the very first minute of my birthday until his arrives!

  2. Hilarious! Natural health? Must have been the childhood trauma of the multiple attempts to disguise echinacea in his food.
Enjoyed learning the getting to know period of you two.

    1. Hahahaha. It was such a weird thing to talk about, I figured it must mean that it’s a super prevalent part of her identity. 😊
