Basement Renovation Mood Boards

Around this time last year, you may remember that Nathan decided to build the boys a sports play area in our basement.

The dumpster showed up, and we cleaned out all of the junk that had accumulated in the basement over the past eight years.

He put in artificial turf, had someone come build a half wall around the field, and he painted all of the walls white. It’s not the prettiest looking area, but I can’t tell you how thankful I was for this space this past winter.

Sometimes you work for function rather than design.

The boys loved this space. We watched endless numbers of football and soccer games down here. Including a Chiefs Superbowl win! It worked well for us and the boys. I mean…an indoor bounce house is SUPER nice in the middle of the winter.

Fast forward to this summer, and we decided that it was time to finish the space, so that we could count this lower level as finished square footage should we ever go to sell the house.

And…construction starts THIS WEEK. Which means that I’m on a time crunch now to finish picking out all of the fixtures and colors!

Nathan and I, though, have an agreement. When it comes to the final decision, he gets final say on basement decisions. I get final say on all kitchen/main floor decisions. And honestly, that’s made the whole thing a bit easier.

Here’s a bit of what we’re doing…

We’re adding a true bedroom in this space…

We’ll end up using the bedroom, though, as a playroom for the boys’ toys.

We’ll add in a full bath. Wall off the unfinished storage area, and add LVP flooring.

We’re trying to decide between two different colors of vanities…

We’re change the hardware and faucet to black on the above option.

Or…

Go with basic white.

And the other thing that we’re debating is the color of the ceiling. We’re going to have exposed ceiling in most of the areas, and we’re debating on a dark grey color or black. Anyone have a strong opinion one way or the other?

  1. I am loving these vision boards! I would tend to think that black would hide more with an exposed ceiling but I don’t really know. I’ve seen so few of them it’s hard to have an opinion…

  2. If you have not had black sink fixtures, you may want to poll the people that do! I don’t care for mine in the master bath in the Hills. No matter how often or products I use to clean, the sink drain always looks chalky.
